E-Learning - LMS for Teachers

CASUS Authoring

Module for Creating Cases

The CASUS authoring tool is easy to use and offers a wide range of options to present your virtual patient cases.

  • Didactic Concept

CASUS is mainly a semi-linear e-learning system, meaning that all students work through the cases in the same order.

We also support a more exploratory (or semi-linear) case design, in which students can make their own decisions about which cards to access next.

  • Multimedia Integration

The CASUS authoring tool supports the integration of numerous media formats, such as images, PDF files or videos. You can display almost any kind of digital content directly in the case or as a hyperlink.

  • Questions

A crucial component in CASUS cases are the different types of questions that you can use to test your students' progress. For example, you can include multiple choice, free-text or list-based questions. This enables you to select the most effective way to ask questions according to the learning objectives that you have set out for your students.

  • Feedback

You can provide feedback for your students in the following ways:

    • After submitting answers to questions, students can receive quantitative and qualitative feedback from the case author or based on the responses by their peers.
    • Additionally, expert comments can provide additional information for students.
    • In the CASUS dashboard and optional discussion boards, students can communicate with the authors, tutors or their peers.
  • Concept Mapping Tool

As part of a EC funded project, a concept mapping tool to support the clinical reasoning learning process using virtual patients has been integrated into CASUS.

Coursemanager

CASUS Course Manager

A Powerful Module to Manage All Users

The CASUS course manager allows you to grant users or grous of users access to your cases and courses. You can also view and analyze reports that illustrate individualized and comprehensive user results from your courses.

  • Course Administration

The CASUS course manager allows you to grant a defined group of users access to your cases:

    • The access manager lets you individualize user rights, such as viewing, reviewing or editing cases. This allows, for example, authors and reviewers to edit assigned cases without having access to usage statistics.
    • Optionally, you can define rules, such as the prerequisite of a successful previous case session in order to access further cases and courses.
    • As a course manager you have access to all usage statistics from your courses in the LMS.
    • Questionnaires can be integrated (e.g. using SurveyMonkey)
    • Personalized and individual course completion certificates can be issued in the form of PDF files.
  • Registration and Authentication

You can use one of the following user registration and authentication procedures:

    • Authentication server (Shibboleth, EduGain, SCORM / AICC-HACP, etc.)
    • Integration with SingleSignOn (e.g. LTI) into learning management systems (LMS), such as moodle
    • Student self-registration with e-mail confirmation
    • Manual creation of users
    • Importing users using a CSV file and assignment to courses
    • Registration and payment with PayPal

Due to the wide range of options, virtually any user management system can be linked to and used in connection with CASUS. Providing easy access and connectivity considerably increases user-friendliness and allows users to reutilize their profiles and passwords.

Teacher Dashboard

CASUS Teacher Dashboard

Display of Results and Quality Management

CASUS offers a wide range of reports that present different aspects of student activity, which can serve as self-assessment for the students as well as quality assurance and the further development of cases.

Results reports can include points/percentages and a graphical representation of students' results; optionally, you can also define your own assessment scales. In addition to various pre-defined reports, we also offer individual student reports as needed.

The results are calculated in real-time and can be exported into MS Excel or jpg-formats for further analysis.

  • Analysis of Learning Progress

Each student has access to his/her individual learning progress, which is displayed in the student's dashboard. Thus, students will receive immediate feedback for self-assessment in the form of:

    • Results/success per case/virtual patient
    • Results as grades, percentage or pass/fail
    • Summary of case results with comprehensive grades
    • Optional complex calculation strategies (e.g. only considering some case sessions, etc.)
  • Quality Assurance

We provide a variety of tools to guarantee the quality of your e-learning courses and cases:

    • Calculation of average grades for a course, case, question, or pre-defined group of students
    • Statistics about student's progress and answers to questions
    • Analysis of questionnaires with individual question items for the purpose of reserach studies or a general evaluation of motivation, content, etc.
