The CASUS authoring tool is easy-to-use and offers many different  ist ein einfach zu bedienen und bietet Ihnen vielfältige Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten.

  • Didactical concept

    CASUS is a semi-linear learning system, which means that all students work through the cases in the same order.

    However, since 2017 we also support a more exploratory (or semi-linear) case design. Learners can make their own decisions about which cards to access next.

  • Multimedia Integration

    The CASUS authoring tool supports the integraion of numerous media formats, such as images, pdf files, or videos. Thus, you can display almost any kind of digital contet directly in the case or as an hyperlink.

  • Questions

    A curcial component in CASUS cases are the different question types. For example, you can include Multiple Choice, freetext or list-based questions. Thus, you can select the most effective question type for the learning objectives you want your student to learn.

  • Feedback

    Feedback to the students is implemented in different ways:

    After answering questions students receive quantitative and qualitative feedback either from the case author or based on peer responsed.

    Additionally, expert comments can provide additional information for the students.

    In the CASUS dashboard and optional discussion boards students can communicate with the author, educators, or their peers.

  • Concept Mapping Tool

    As part of an EC funded project a concept mapping tool to support the clinical reasoning learning process in the virtual patients has been integrated into CASUS.


CASUS Coursemanager

A powerful module to manage all users.

The CASUS Coursemanager allows you to grant users or grous of users access to your cases and courses. You can access and interpret both, individual and comprehensive results of your courses.

  • Course Administration

    The CASUS Coursemanager allows you to grant access to your cases for a defined group of users:

    • With the access manager you can define rights of users, such as viewing, reviewing, or editing cases. This allows for example authors and reviewers to edit assigned cases, without haveing access to any usage statistics. 
    • For the access to cases or courses you can optionally define rules, such as a successful previous case session
    • You have access to all usages statistics in your courses.
    • Questionnaires can be integrated (e.g. via SurveyMonkey)
    • Personalized and individual course completion certificates can be issued as pdf files.

  • Registrierung and Authentication

    You can use one of the following registration and authentication procedures for your users:

    • Authenticationserver (Shibboleth, EduGain, SCORM / AICC-HACP, etc.)
    • Integration via SingleSignOn (e.g. LTI) into learning management systems such as moodle
    • Self registration of students with email confirmation
    • Manual creation of users
    • Import of users via CSV-file and assignment to courses
    • Registration and payment via PayPal


    Aufgrund der Vielzahl an Optionen kann an nahezu jedes Nutzerverwaltungssystem angeknüpft werden. Eine Anbindung erhöht die Akzeptanz bei den Teilnehmern erheblich, da Sie mit vorhandenen Nutzerdaten arbeiten können und wissen, an welcher Stelle Sie das Passwort ändern können.

Display of results and quality management

CASUS offers a variety of reports for learner's activities, which can serve as self assessment for the learners as well as for quality assurance and further development of cases. 

The report of results can include points/percentages and a graphical representation; you can optionally also define your own assessment scales. In addition to the wide range of pre-defined reports we offer additional individualized reports is needed.

The results are calculated in real-time and can be exported into MS-Excel or jpg-formats for further analysis.

  • Analysis of learning progress

    Each learner has access to his/her individual learning progress in the learner's dashboard. Thus lerners receive immediate feedback for self assessment as

    • Results/Sucess per case/virtual patient
    • Results as grades, percentage or passed/failed.
    • Summary of case results with comprehensive grades
    • Optional complex strategies for calculations (e.g. only considering some case sessions, etc)
  • Quality assurance

    To guarantee the quality of your courses and cases we provide a variety of tools:

    • Calculation of average grades for a course, a case, a question, or a group of learners
    • Statistics about learners progress and answers to questions
    • Analysis of questionnaires with individual question items for the purpose of reserach studies or a general evaluation of motivation, content, etc.

CASUS Assessment

Learning and assessment are very different challenges for an online system, such as CASUS. Online assessment has to fullfill certain formal requirements concerning access, duration, and documentation of results and technical requirements concerning availability and security. CASUS offers individualized assessments concentrating on case-based assessment formats, such as key-features, which are short cases focusing on relevant decision points.

You can use CASUS as an innovative assessment tool and use the specific features, such as adaptable navigation, reduced interface, detailled loggin of user actions or supression of qualitative and quantitative feedback.
