The Development of CASUS
In 1993, Dr. Martin Fischer founded a workgroup for computer-based learning programs for courses and further training in the field of medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. At the center of Dr. Fischer's workgroup efforts was researching how prospective medical practitioners could be assisted in making the right decisions for each patient explored utilizing authentic examples. Building on Dr. Fischer's efforts, an interdisciplinary workgroup was formed in 1994 to develop an easy-to-operate authoring system. The interdisciplinary workgroup was comprised of medical practitioners, pedagogical instructors and IT specialists whose goal was to develop an authoring system for university lectures to be used to create interactive multimedia case studies for students. Out of these workgroups came the creation and development of the CASUS Learning System.
